I had not been born when this man landed on Normandy Beach 82 years ago today.

My friend Stg. Harold Gross was among the many who heard the message loud and clear from Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower just before.

"The hope and prayers of freedom loving people EVERYWHERE are with you."

The lessons I learned from him have remain too vast to summarize here but suffice it to say, I'm grateful to him and many others.

This memory and portrait of Harold was made the day I met him. The day in 2023 when a fragment of that era's history, walked into my studio.

To Harold and the greatest generation with so much love and gratitude!

Still the anthem of "freedom loving people everywhere."

One common mistake I see in Sweet 16 photography?
Treating the dress as the subject.
Now don't get me wrong—the dress is often a huge part of the celebration. Families spend months choosing it, altering it, and making sure every detail is perfect.
But when I'm creating portraits, my goal is to make sure the young woman remains the focus of every image.
The dress should enhance the story, not become the story.
When posing, lighting, and composing a portrait, I'm constantly asking myself one question:
"Does my eye go to her first?"
If the answer is yes, we're on the right track.

Some teens truly just want to be immersed in nature. That was certainly the case with this senior portrait session, and I'm glad the studio is just minutes from Philippe Park—one of my favorite spots anywhere in Florida.

One of the many things I love about making portraits here is the variety of backdrops I can create within a relatively small area. In just a short walk, you can move from dense greenery to wide-open waterfront views, which gives every session a lot of visual variety without ever feeling rushed.

One thing that never stops surprising me is how much a hairstyle can change the way a portrait feels.

Sure, there are other elements at play here, but when I look at these images side by side, I still catch myself wondering if I'm looking at the same person. These were made just moments apart on the same day, yet they create two completely different impressions.

It's always refreshing to meet young people who are old souls.

That quality made this vintage summer-inspired shoot feel authentic, rather than simply taking advantage of a weathered old truck sitting outside the studio.

The truck belonged to a neighbor who was kind enough to let us use it, but I think you know what I'm getting at.

These are freshly edited images from a shoot I did with a young Julia years ago. She's a big high school kid now, but it was fun revisiting these moments and seeing them with fresh eyes.

Nobody can say I'm biased... 😉

Being a girl dad is rad but being a girl dad who is a photographer is even better...I mean for me! There are very few occasions where my kids don't absolutely hate it for which I'm grateful.😅

I love looking back at all the photos I've taken of my kids and what I hope they will see someday, perhaps even after I've gone is the love, the dreams, and the prayers I've had for them.

I remember sitting there, looking up, and realizing I was witnessing something beyond words...

I knew it then, and I feel it now. Love isn't something scientists can fully explain, nor can they argue it away from any of us.

A simple reminder of why, after 15 years of telling stories, I still get butterflies when people trust me with stories that matter to them.

Butterflies, actually, because those very stories ought to matter to all of us a whole lot more, too.
