FACT CHECK: Undocumented Immigrants Are Not Living Off Government Benefits.
Republicans are lying when they say Democrats are creating this government shutdown in order to give healthcare to "illegal aliens." Undocumented people cannot qualify for federal aid. Only U.S. citizens can, with some minor exceptions.
Republican Ronald Reagan signed into law that hospitals cannot turn away anyone for emergency care, regardless of immigration status or whether the patient was insured or not. The alternative is to let people die in the hospital parking lot. Medicaid reimburses the hospitals.
Other than this, Federal law bars undocumented immigrants from federal benefits (SNAP, regular Medicaid, Welfare, Obamacare, Social Security, etc.). Even if the Democrats wanted to provide free healthcare to Undocumented Immigrants, they are barred by law to do so.
** Some states, like California, do provide some social services to undocumented workers, but, that is state law, not federal.
Things like emergency room care, vaccinations, and school lunches for children — are all meant to protect public health and safety, not to hand out benefits.
Meanwhile, undocumented workers are paying a lot in taxes (using ITIN’s) — even though they can’t use many of the services those taxes fund.
• In 2022, undocumented immigrants paid $96.7 billion in total federal, state & local taxes.
• Of that, roughly $59.4 billion went to the federal government.
• They also paid billions more in Social Security, Medicare, and other payroll-taxes — even though they are largely ineligible for the benefits those programs provide.
Here's the truth - Undocumented Immigrants do not receive benefits from the federal government yet they contribute $$$ Billions to the economy and in paid taxes, while they are prohibited from using the benefits they help to fund. They contribute to Social Security with their taxes, but, cannot receive SSI benefits.
