Happy Belated 80th Birthday to the one and only Archie Lee Bell of Houston’s own Archie Bell & The Drells! This group is synonymous with my entrance into soul music, record collecting, and going to soul clubs, and it all started with that infamous baseline. Bell’s voice and vocal delivery was always tough and in perfect contrast to the sultry backing vocals and smooth grooves of the rhythm section.

Their iconic tune “Tighten Up” along the rest of that similarly titled first album will forever be etched into my mind and no matter how many times it’s played it never gets played out. With other tunes like “There’s Gonna Be A Showdown” and “I Can’t Stop Dancing” this group had a way about them that few others could recreate. We play a lot of songs but I think we’ll definitely be playing one of these tomorrow night for the Capital City Soul Club One Year Anniversary with Special Guest DJ Matt Stout
