🎉✨ Happy Birthday to me — 59 today!

Hi friends and followers, it feels like the perfect moment to share a little more about myself again. I was born in Rio de Janeiro Brazil, 59 years ago today, a city full of music, sunshine and beauty. Before flowers became my passion I worked in hospitality and my last job there was as assistant manager at the front desk of the legendary Copacabana Palace Hotel.

In 1997 life brought me to the United States. Here I built a new life with my Brazilian husband, our 21 year old son, and our little boss Gustav, the mini Australian Shepherd who keeps us laughing and in our toes every single day.

Flowers became my world slowly but surely. At first it was classes at the New York Botanical Garden, then freelancing for other florists, and eventually my own business, Fani Flowers LLC. For years I worked from my home and garage before moving into a studio in Port Chester, and now I am back in my newly renovated home studio. Through every stage, flowers have taught me patience, resilience, creativity, and the joy of community.

I am Jewish, and my roots travel far. My grandparents came from Turkey, Syria, and Poland, then began a new chapter in Brazil. That mix of cultures, languages, and flavors is the soil I grew from, and it is in everything I create.

When I am not working with flowers, I love gardening, taking care of my house plants, collecting scarves and salt and pepper shakers. I have dozens of them, each one with its own story. My favorite color is blue, but flowers have taught me to see beauty in every shade.

So here is to 59, to love, to family, to Gustav, to my friends, followers and customers, scarves and salt shakers, and to flowers in every season 🌸

Thank you for following along on my journey. If you were designing a birthday bouquet for me, what flowers would you choose 💐

✨ Gmar Chatima Tovah ✨

Today, as Yom Kippur comes, I want to wish everyone Gmar Chatima Tovah — a Hebrew phrase that means “May you be sealed in the Book of Life for good.”

On this day of reflection, forgiveness, and renewal, Jewish tradition teaches that our fates are “sealed” for the coming year. It’s a time to look inward, make amends, and open our hearts with kindness and hope.

Wishing you all peace, health, and sweetness in the year ahead.

🍎✨ Shana Tova ✨🍯

For more than 15 years I have belonged to Community Synagogue of Rye, and it is always such an honor to create flowers for the High Holidays. Year after year I prepare arrangements for the sanctuary, and throughout the year I also design for B’nai Mitzvah families who trust me with their celebrations. I feel so grateful for this community and the connection we share.

This year I designed arrangements for the sanctuary with white flowers, a symbol of peace, new beginnings, and reflection as we welcome the Jewish New Year.

Along with the flowers, I am also sharing a picture of a chair with the Israeli flag and a yellow ribbon , a reminder of the hostages who are still in captivity. As we gather with family and community to celebrate, we keep them in our prayers and hold hope for their safe return.

Wishing everyone a sweet, healthy, and meaningful year ahead. Shana Tova Umetuka. 🍯🍎🌸

✨ After over a year of planning every detail side by side with the mother of the bride, watching it all come to life felt nothing short of magical. Every conversation, every bit of twinkling and dreaming, became reality in the most breathtaking way.

The bride was radiant, the bridesmaids were stunning, and the color scheme tied everything together so beautifully against the backdrop of the Mamaroneck Beach and Yacht Club. One of the most meaningful touches was the lace from the mother of the bride’s own wedding dress, wrapped around the bridal bouquet and tucked into the groom’s pocket boutonniere, a thread of family love woven right into the flowers.

This wedding was truly a labor of love. I spent countless hours creating every piece, including late nights in my studio and even working until 1 AM the day before to make sure everything was just right. On the wedding day, Suzanne and Grace joined me to help with the setup, and their support made all the difference as the vision came alive.

The minute I finished, I crashed and slept straight through until today, Sunday, when it is back to reality, cleaning up the studio and getting ready for the next project. That is the rhythm of this work, and I would not have it any other way. 💕

✨ Flower Journey, Part 2 ✨

After working many years from my garage studio, I always felt that the real growth came not just from creating, but from learning. I never wanted to be a “big thing” — I was simply happy to grow slowly, year by year, giving more each season and being part of my community through local schools, fundraisers, and events.

Throughout these years, I’ve taken every opportunity to keep learning — from unforgettable workshops in Quebec, Philadelphia, and Connecticut with renowned floral artists, to lessons shared by talented local florists who became friends along the way. Each experience added new skills, ideas, and inspiration that shaped my style.

And even today — as I write this post, I am in Boston at a 2 day workshop with an award-winning florist. Always learning, always improving. That’s what keeps the flowers (and me!) alive, fresh, and inspired. 🌸💛

🌸 Part One: The Beginning of My Flower Journey 🌸

Every story has a beginning, and mine starts in 1999, when I moved to a house with a beautiful garden — something I had never experienced before, coming from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Surrounded by flowers, I felt a pull to learn how to care for them, what to plant, how to arrange, and how to bring out their beauty.

That curiosity led me to take classes at the New York Botanical Garden. At first, I just wanted to tend my garden. But class after class, I found myself completely immersed in the world of floral design. Eventually, I realized I only needed to complete weddings and sympathy arrangements to earn the Floral Designer Certification — and in 2004, I proudly received it.

✨ After that, I spent several years working as a freelancer for local flower shops and event designers. Those years were full of lessons: learning different styles, techniques, and the rhythm of professional floral work.

✨ In 2009, I designed my very first bouquet and my very first wedding on my own. It was nerve-wracking and exhilarating — but also the moment I knew this was more than a passion.

✨ Finally, on September 12, 2013, I officially launched my own floral business.

Looking back, the journey from my first garden in Stamford, CT, to freelancing, to finally taking the leap into my own business, feels like a tapestry of experiences woven together with flowers. From small gifts for friends and teachers, to the milestones of clients who trusted me, every step has led to this chapter.

These pictures are from my first wedding , my first flower crown, my first grand scale arrangement, first large wedding, first Bat Mitzvah, first Chuppah , first standing order and first art show! 🌸🌸🌸

This is only Part One of my flower journey. There’s so much more to share — the studio days, the transitions, and the stories behind the blooms 🌿💐 Stay tuned for Part Two!
