Nobody talks about the chest freezer setup enough.
If you’re serious about homesteading and self-sufficiency, two chest freezers are more valuable than almost any other investment you can make on your property. Here’s what I run:
Two 7-cubic-foot chest freezers in my outbuilding. Total cost: about $400. Total capacity: enough for a whole whitetail, a full season of garden produce, and a half hog.
That’s a year of real food. Grown, raised, or harvested by me. At my fingertips.
A few things I’ve learned:
— Chest freezers are far more energy efficient than uppackht freezers. The cold air stays in when you open the lid instead of falling out.
— Vacuum sealing is worth it for anything going longer than 3 months. Venison especially. Butcher paper works fine for shorter storage but vacuum sealed meat at 12 months tastes like it was processed yesterday.
— Keep a handwritten inventory on the lid with a dry erase marker. Date everything. Rotate stock. Sounds basic but most people don’t do it and end up throwing out good food.
— A small generator as backup is worth every penny. One power outage can wipe out $1,000 worth of food.
The chest freezer setup is the backbone of a real food system. Garden, hunt, raise animals — but without proper storage none of it matters.
What’s your storage setup? Always curious what others are running.
I write about practical homesteading like this every week — real setups, real food, what actually works on small acreage. Link in comments 👇 if you want in.

I’m 58 years old and I’m in the best shape of my life. Not because I live in a gym — because I train with a purpose.
The goal isn’t aesthetics. The goal is to be able to hunt hard in September, carry a heavy pack into the backcountry, work my property without breaking down, and feel genuinely good doing all of it for as long as possible.
Here’s what that actually looks like in practice:
— Rucking 3x per week. 25–35 lbs, 3–4 miles. Nothing builds functional fitness for hunters and people who work land like walking with weight. Low impact, sustainable for decades, directly transfers to every physical demand this lifestyle makes.
— Compound lifts. Deadlifts, squats, rows, presses. Not machines. Not isolation exercises. Movements that build real-world strength — the kind that helps you drag a deer out of a hollow or move a 50-lb bag of feed without thinking twice.
— Protein first. Every meal built around a quality protein source — wild game, eggs from my own chickens, clean animal protein. Everything else fills in around it. You cannot build or maintain muscle without adequate protein. Most people over 50 eat far too little of it.
— Sleep like it’s your job. Recovery is where progress happens. If you’re training hard and sleeping 5–6 hours you’re spinning your wheels.
I’m not where I want to be yet — but I’m moving in the right direction. That’s the only standard that matters.
Anyone else out there training specifically for the demands of hunting season and an active outdoor lifestyle? What’s working for you?
I write about fitness for the outdoor lifestyle, hunting, homesteading, and real food every week. Practical stuff from someone living it in East Tennessee. Link in comments 👇 if you want in.
