Students from 49 Franklin's School of Magic and Showmanship gather to perform daring and challenging escapes in "The Escape Show" on Saturday June 7th at 6:00 pm and Sunday at 1:00 pm at 49 Franklin's Mystic Theater in Rumford.
Class members include Oliver Bulger, Cohen Carrier, Lee Carrier, Landyn Cote, Grayson Elliott, Allden Gaudet, Maverick Hamner, Mayli Poirier. Each student has their own personality and performing style and will be featured in their own specialty escape as well as helping others as assistants with plenty of audience engagement. The show opens with a group escape, freeing themselves from wrists tied with rope, and closes with wrists chained and paddle locked. The body of the show includes liberating themselves from 100' of rope, chains, locks, shackles and handcuffs, straitjacket, Mailbag escape, packing boxes and more! Imagine the challenge of getting restrained and escaping in front of a live audience. These students have been working and training to do so in an exciting and entertaining performance.
Escapes as an entertainment medium garnered phenomenal popularity in the 1920's with the rise to stardom of Harry Houdini. Houdini's performances escalated when he turned from magic shows to escape shows with great publicity stunts and death-defying effects in his shows. Houdini's escapes were popular with the public because of the struggles he overcame were easily relatable. His fight to free himself led to a victorious celebration at the conclusion of each effect. Later in his performing career he went from a visual struggle to escaping behind a curtain or out of sight of the audience. People guessed he could only possess supernatural powers. Did he dematerialize and rematerialize outside of the restraints? Did he melt through the chains? All of Houdini's secrets were revealed upon his untimely death and are available in books.
