France is experiencing its earliest heatwave on record. For the first time since the national weather alert system was created in 2004, authorities issued a formal heatwave warning in the month of May. And in Paris, forecasters say temperatures could approach 95°F (35°C) this week, threatening a record that has stood since May 29, 1944.

That record, 94.6°F (34.8°C), was set during the occupation. It has not been matched in over 80 years. The official weather station at Parc Montsouris in southern Paris recorded 90.5°F (32.5°C) on Sunday. Forecasters say the peak is still ahead.

The cause is a heat dome. A zone of high pressure has been trapping hot air that moved up from North Africa through Spain, compressing it into the lower atmosphere and driving temperatures far above seasonal norms. Météo-France described the episode as "early and remarkable" and said it would last at least through the weekend.

Across France, May temperature records fell at more than ten weather stations in a single day. Bergerac hit 92.8°F (33.8°C). Brest hit 85.6°F (29.8°C), breaking a record that dated to 1995. Climate scientists say episodes like this are not anomalies anymore. Temperatures that would have been nearly impossible in France 30 or 40 years ago are now a predictable feature of spring.

The oldest bridge in Paris has vanished this week, as the artist JR — who is known as the “French Banksy” — inflated a giant “cave” over the Pont Neuf.

The monumental, rocky illusion is swallowing the 17th-century landmark, which has carried Parisians across the Seine for more than 400 years. By Thursday, it looked as if a prehistoric cliff had risen in the heart of the city.
