One of the things that we love about our tradition is the structured language Gaugler gives us to describe actions. Inspired by Ari Simmons’s series, we’re asking our students and teachers, “What’s your favorite move?” so they can describe it in our formal system. Matthew Lawrence Han Guo

Fun epee workshop with Maestro Kevin Murakoshi, Maestro Ryan Mank (Red Sun Classical Fencing ) and Maestro Brian Bacher at the Fencing Masters Certificate Program this summer. We looked at the cross-section of modern epee fencing techniques with classical Italian epee.

Getting some solid reps with Marli (HARP Fencing).

(side chat: I'm so used to seeing myself in blue socks for fencing, it's real weird to see me in white ones)

The FMCP examination is conducted over two days. The first day evaluates each candidate’s ability to teach a group class, assessing instructional skills, class organization, communication, and the ability to effectively present fencing concepts to multiple students.

The second day consists of the practical examination, which includes both teaching and receiving individual lessons, as well as a comprehensive oral examination. Candidates are also presented with random fencing actions and scenarios designed to evaluate their ability to analyze, reason through, and solve technical and tactical problems in real time. Each candidate is evaluated by a board of Fencing Masters with more than 60 years of combined experience within the Fencing Masters Certification Program, bringing decades of instructional, technical, and evaluative expertise to the examination process.

This year’s examination included one Instructor at Arms candidate, who was evaluated on teaching proficiency in a single weapon, and five Provost at Arms candidates, each of whom was required to demonstrate proficiency in teaching all three weapons: foil, épée, and saber.
