She was a young schoolteacher in Brussels, just 21 years old, when she looked at her classroom and realized the world had gone mad. It was 1942. The N**i occupation of Belgium had brought a suffocating darkness to the city, and suddenly, some of her students arrived at school with a yellow star sewn onto their clothes.

To the regime, those stars were a mark of shame.

To Andrée Geulen, they were a heartbreaking insult to the innocence of childhood.

Andrée didn’t just feel sorry for them. She acted. The very next day, she walked into her classroom and gave a simple instruction that defied an empire. She told every single student to put on their school smocks. In an instant, the yellow stars were covered.

Underneath those plain work coats, there were no "different" children. There were no labels or divisions. There were just students, equal and protected, if only for a few hours.

This small act of defiance was the spark that changed her life forever. She realized that covering a star wasn't enough to save a life. Soon, Andrée joined the clandestine Jewish Defense Committee. Her new "job" was terrifying.

She had to go door-to-door to Jewish families, look heartbroken parents in the eye, and ask them for the impossible: to give up their children so they could be hidden.

"I had to tell them it was their only chance," she later recalled. It was a mission of desperation. She wasn't just a teacher anymore; she was a lifeline. She began hiding twelve Jewish children right inside her own school, right under the noses of the occupiers.

Living a double life, Andrée was constantly on the move. She used false names, forged documents, and secret addresses to keep hundreds of children safe in schools, convents, and private homes.

She kept a secret record of their real names and their hidden locations, hoping that one day, she could reunite these families. She knew that if she were caught, it would mean an immediate death sentence.

The danger was constant and cold. One day, N**i officers raided the school where she worked. They were aggressive and full of hate. One officer looked at her with pure contempt and asked, "Aren't you ashamed to teach Jewish children?"

Andrée didn’t flinch. She didn’t look away. She looked him directly in the eyes and fired back with a question that stripped away his power: "And aren't you ashamed to wage war against children?"

She continued her work until the very end of the war, helping to save nearly a thousand lives. When the nightmare finally ended, she didn't stop. She spent years helping these children find their surviving relatives or placing them in safe homes, ensuring their futures weren't lost to the trauma of the past.

Andrée Geulen never wanted to be a celebrity. She lived a long, quiet life, reaching the age of 100 before passing away in 2022. She was honored as "Righteous Among the Nations" by Yad Vashem, a title given to non-Jews who risked everything to save Jewish people during the Holocaust.

Even with all the praise, she remained humble, insisting she simply did what had to be done.

Sometimes, standing up to evil starts with a piece of chalk, a child's smock, and the quiet strength of someone who saw her students as children.
