R.I.P. to the great Phil Lesh.

My life, and understanding of it and experiences of the world would be dramatically different without him and The Grateful Dead.

It’s been a long strange trip together and I am so happy and blessed to have seen him perform many times, including with the proper Grateful Dead in my early teens and lastly, just in Marshfield, MA at Levitate Fest just 2 years ago.

Box of Rain is a critical song for me. It has been everywhere with me on my journey and is part of my “Philosophy of Song” playlist of music I have been focusing on as the important, foundational songs that are personally worth it to me to learn and try to master and perform and share. We have to keep them alive. I just recently been working on it for the past few weeks and studying it…I hope to get it to the place where I can do it justice live and not some shotty, half-assed knock-off. There is a depth and nuance needed to even attempt the song with any degree of credibility. If any is sacred, it is, and it was one of the many great contributions of Phil….the music was Phil’s, with lyrics by Robert Hunter which Phil asked him to write for his dying father…❤️
