It's National Poinsettia Day! Native to Mexico and Central America this ever popular plant synonymous with Christmas was originally brought to America in the 1820’s by Joel Robert Poinsett, ambassador to Mexico and a hobby botanist. Today poinsettias are the top selling plant in the US--around 70 million poinsettias are cultivated and sold every year in the six weeks leading up to Christmas! Long before they were brought to the states the Aztecs used the plant's milky sap to make medicine and used their brightly colored leaves (yes those are leaves not petals!) to create dyes. History is fuzzy on how they became a symbol of Christmas, some claim missionaries in Mexico believed the shape of their leaves symbolized the Star of Bethlehem and began to use them to decorate nativity scenes.
