We have some sad news...

After 5+ incredible years, 742 North will be closing. The building has been sold, and our last day of operation will be September 6th.

We are so grateful for the love we have shared and the community we have built these past few years. We've made lots of memories and are forever thankful for everything.

We've been home to lots of businesses over the years, and we're honored to have been a part of Rock Hill's wonderful small business community. We are leaving on a high note- 2025 has been our best year overall, and our members will be transitioning to new homes soon. Special thanks to Loom Coworking and BNA Coworking for working with us to help our community transition.

We plan to have a farewell party on September 6th, so save the date and plan to join us for a final evening of 742 shenanigans. More details to come.

If you start a new business in South Carolina, the very first scam that will come your way are the fake letters you receive instructing you to send in a check for "required forms" related to your new entity; sometimes they're outright threatening. The valid forms are all accessible online through official channels at much lower, or no, costs, but frustratingly the state both sells new company information to third parties with no oversight, and in many cases, gives it away for free knowing scam artists use the data to scam startups!

The first one on the left is for a Labor Law Poster, which is ACTUALLY required to be posted if you have employees. The scam letter offers to send you one for $108, but these posters can be obtained for "free" (tax-payer funded) from the DOL. Link in comments.

The right-hand side is a very official offering from Compliance DFS (the irony!) for a Certificate of Existence (aka Certificate of Authority), which is a common form that a bank or attorneys might ask for in the normal course of business for $123.25+$5.95=$128.25. You can get the same form from the Secretary of State for $10.

Shame on the State of South Carolina for allowing these deceptive businesses prey on entrepreneurs and beware so you don't get taken advantage of!
