Hello Summer!

The sunflowers and zinnias are opening on the farm! That means it is officially summer!

This week’s subsribers are getting sunflowers and feverfew, buleurum and stock, raspberry yarrow and larkspur. A lucky few might even see poppies!

Subscription pick up: Monday @ the farmstand/Tuesday @ Ashley Jackson Beauty and Salon in Freeport.

Fresh Bouquets will be available Tuesday-Thursday this week. First come basis, friends! Go early.

Farmstand will be stocked Thursday- Saturday/ 3-7 pm.
If you need flowers on a the stand is not open just reach out.

So you just bought bouquet on the farmstand…now what?

I get asked all the time what’s the best way to care for my fresh cut flowers?

The simple answer is cut the stems and give them freshwater every other day, and don’t forget the flower food.

Sometimes you’re fresh flowers may wilt or look like they’re struggling. The best bet is to take them out of the vase and give them fresh water, cut the stems on an angle, give them a little bit flower food, if you want, you can put a dash of bleach to kill any bacteria. Keep them out of bright light or away from heat and they should be good.

Fresh cut flowers generally last 7 to 10 days. Some like Lisianthus and Orlaya once hydrated can last up to 14 days.

Some blooms are just picky, especially the wildflowers or some of the delicate whimsical flowers. But usually we try to hydrate our flowers for a few days before you even get them so that you are getting the freshest best blooms possible.

Sometimes if they’re special blooms and they have been cooled for a while, they will have a shorter shelf life.

If I have fresh flowers that wilt, I take them out of the vase, clean them up and get rid of any leaves or debris in the water or on the stems, give them a fresh cut and put fresh water back into my vase.

I also feed the flowers regularly. If you don’t have any flower food, you can use sugar and a little bit of vinegar dissolved in water.

But there’s a great trick for wilted flowers: Boiling water!

Yep! It’s magic!✨

Boiling water will cause a wilted flower to become re-hydrated and stand-up.

I use boiling water on a lot of my difficult flowers that wilt as soon as I pick them like basil and dahlias and feverfew.

Here’s how to do it:

I like to use a canning jar fill it 1/4 of the way full (not a lot of water). Put it in the microwave for two minutes. (Be careful the jar will be hot.) I cut the stem and then set it in the hot water till it stands up. That’s it!

Some flowers like dahlias get this treatment right when they are cut to help them hydrate better.

Mostly, just remember your flowers are living things that need care, and with good care they will last longer for you.

It’s a stormy wet week and my flowers need the rain but my farmstand wilts so the schedule is different this week.

💐Grab bouquets off the stand Wed/Fri/Sat 3-7pm. If it’s raining they won’t be on the stand, but you can still get flowers. Text the # on the stand.

🌼Thanks to so many of you who support local growers like me. We aren’t the only flower farm in the area and it’s awesome to see others flourishing in their passions. Local flowers are cultivated with deep intention and purpose. They are going to last longer than store bought, be more unique and diverse and just beautiful because they are grown and harvested so purposefully.

Cress is a long loved favorite for me, but until this year I have not seen it grow this tall and beautiful. It was winter sown and left alone. It has been a forgotten surprise, honestly, and I love it!

I learn the most from how nature nurtures and grows beauty. Maybe we all need to learn to sow the best seeds and let them rest till the best time to bloom.
