The color of hydrangeas depends on the soil pH and the presence of aluminum.

How Soil Affects Color
* Acidic Soil (pH 5.5 and below): Creates blue flowers because the plant easily absorbs aluminum.
* Neutral Soil (pH 5.5 to 6.5): Creates purple or lavender flowers as a mix of both colors.
* Alkaline Soil (pH 6.5 and above): Creates pink or red flowers because high pH blocks aluminum uptake.

Changing Bloom Colors
* To get blue flowers: Lower the pH and add aluminum by mixing in elemental sulfur, pine needles, or aluminum sulfate.
* To get pink flowers: Raise the pH by adding garden lime or wood ash.

* Wait for the droop: let the leaves slump slightly downward before you give it a drink.
* Skip the tap chemicals: Peace lilies hate the chlorine and fluoride found in regular tap water. Use filtered water, distilled water, or leave tap water out overnight so the chemicals can evaporate.
* Drain completely: Never let the pot sit in water

Lighting and Blooming Tricks
* More light = more flowers: While they survive in dark corners, they rarely bloom there. Move your plant to a spot with bright, indirect light (like near an east-facing window) to trigger those iconic white flowers.
