Congrats to , , , .andrakim, and for being inducted into the today.

The first recording artist inductees were in 1983 and the main rule to be inducted is that you must have a professional recording released at least 25 years prior to the current induction year to be considered. (Kool Herc is not a recording artist but definitely deserves to be in there).

The photo in my post appears to be every hip hop artist who has been inducted thusfar since the R&RHOF started in 1983.

Me in 1986 w/ my first rapper, Cool Breeze (RIP). I had just started DJing and scratching records and every scratch DJ needed this record in my hand. It took me 2 years to get it and I got that adrenaline rush when I finally found it.

This 4/20, and I are DJing for the man who created it: . At the time of this pic, I had already known him from being a star in the first hip hop movie, The Wildstyle, but little did I know he’d eventually host the first nationally televised hip hop music video show, Yo! MTV Raps, which millions of U.S. hip hop fans tuned into religiously. His life story has lots more to mention but I’ll let him tell the rest

Doing a guest DJ set on tonight from 8-10pm. DJing started in my bedroom as a 14 year old making mixtapes for my friends in high school 1 by 1. In those years, I’d listen to on religiously every Sunday night from 6-9pm. Kev would expose us to all the underground hip-hop from New York at the time that you couldn’t hear anywhere else. He even played my demo with MC Mark S once which was a dream come true.

Eventually, when I was in college, I spun on the hip hop specialty show, which was on the weekends after midnight and I even started a 70s funk show w/ my childhood friend . This was 1990 and the music director and program director and I all pitched in $500 each to release my first hip hop record I produced (Lyrical Prophecy). Those experiences truly laid my foundation in the music industry that is still thriving 35 years later. And I still have the passion for discovering and sharing music. Thank you KCRW for giving me a new platform to share. I’ve spent countless hours listening to this station since moving to LA in 2001.
