The Rentiesville Dusk ‘Til Dawn Blues Festival is just a road trip away for some, and a flight across the ocean for others. To say our festival is loved by many is an understatement. After all, the annual convergence of award-winning artists, blues fans, loving volunteers and vendors happens every Labor Day weekend on the very ground the Cozy Corner juke joint stood.
Blues legend and festival founder D.C. Minner grew up in the Cozy Corner learning to appreciate hardiness, entrepreneurship, and perhaps most importantly, the power of live music.
Historically, juke joints brought black folks together for the camaraderie, food, and music. And for the Cozy Corner, at least up until 1959 when Oklahomans repealed prohibition, (yes, 26 years after prohibition ended nationally) it gave Rentiesville residents and visitors--including soldiers from Camp Gruber--access to alcohol, to important community news, and a connection to the outside world via radio. Minner’s grandmother, Lura Drennan, who owned the juke joint, also used it as a store. Her business sense brought money in for her family during the lean times of the Great Depression.
D.C. Minner had gained experience from older mentors who visited the Cozy Corner to learn to play music, and had also gained experience from his service in the military and personal spiritual retreats to interact with a variety of people, including friends he would travel and play music with. Minner met and fell in love with an artistic, sharp-witted and curious Northeasterner named Susan Guenther while on that journey.
Fast forward to 1990 when D.C. and Susan “Selby” Minner brought together friends to play at the first festival. Today, the Rentiesville Dusk ‘Til Dawn Blues festival has grown to hundreds of musicians on three stages, imagination-evoking puppets in the Kids Village, camping in all forms, and a fun-loving crowd in the thousands.
We invite you, your family and friends to cut a rug in this hallowed site. Like others who have attended for nearly three decades, you’ll come back year after year for more.
