Hope to see you this weekend!
One of America's greatest playwrights, Arthur Miller was known for exposing uncomfortable truths about society. He wrote The Crucible in 1953 in response to the Red Scare and McCarthyism, when Americans were being blacklisted and accused of communism without proof. Drawing a powerful parallel to the Salem witch trials, Miller explored how fear, hysteria, and lust for power can fuel injustice—and how personal guilt can collide with collective madness. He saw himself in the play’s flawed hero, John Proctor, a man seeking to reclaim his integrity after an affair, through whom Miller grappled with his own moral failure and redemption. A few years later when Miller was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee he refused to give names, resulting in a citation for contempt of Congress.
More than 50 years later, The Crucible still challenges us to consider what happens when truth is sacrificed to fear—and what it takes to stand firm in uncertain times.
