The embroidery took months. The peacock on the pallu, the elephants marching along the hem, every bead placed by hand — and then she put it on, and for a few hours before the ceremony, it was just hers.

This is why we show up early. Not for the getting-ready shots everyone expects, but for the in-between — the outfit on the rack before it's worn, the henna still fresh, the look between two people who forgot the camera was even there.
