Once again we pulled out all the Marshall’s and SVT rigs for the Sturgis Rally. We were at Shade Valley Resort again this year for Shot of Poison, Dokken, Quiet Riot, Bullet Boys and Sebastian Bach. A big thank you to Ryan at Shade Valley and also to Jory Berge, Paul, James, Hoops and Joe from Nightlife Productions for all the help getting me through another Rally.

Last night I finished up what I believe was my 10th Hills Alive festival. We dealt with some weather issues on Saturday but overall, this year went well. I am privileged and grateful that I get to work with some of the best production staff and stagehands in the business. Again this year, the all-volunteer stage crew at Hills Alive did their usual amazing job at keeping this show on track. This crew gets together once a year and rivals any stage crew anywhere. I couldn’t do this without them and can’t thank them enough.

A beautiful day became a stormy mess with Starship and Mickey Thomas last night in Deadwood. Too bad - Mickey Thomas is still an amazing singer. We started a little early and had to stop the show four songs in. Ironically, their final song was “Nothings Going to Stop Us Now”. A huge thank you to Jason and his Powerhouse Audio crew, Outlaw Square staff, the Security staff and Starship’s crew for their quick action in keeping the gear dry and safe.

Once again, it’s Hammond day at Dakota Backline. I take one day - a couple times a year to clean, oil and run my inventory of B3 Hammonds and Leslie’s. Every time I do this process, I think of my dear friend Ricky Jacobson. Ricky was a master at the Hammond organ and I learned a lot from him about these magnificent instruments. Sure miss that man.

Added a few more interesting items this week. Maybe I should learn to play lap steel. Also, I’m finally starting to see some summer backline activity.

Added a few nice vintage items again this week. A ‘50s Rickenbacker Steel, an old Custom Kraft tube amp, a ‘60s “Chris” student guitar, a rare 1939 King Zephyr Special Alto sax and a 1948 Martin Tenor. Also finished the new aged tweed recover on a 1956 Gibson GA6 amp.

Not a lot of backline in the winter months so I’m happy buying and selling in the guitar shop along with some repairs and a couple refinish jobs. Also picked up a few nice vintage items last week. ‘70s Univox “Hi Flyer”, a Sonor “Phil Rudd”signature brass snare and a 1967 Kalamazoo model one tube amp.

I keep this old newspaper clipping on the wall at the shop. It’s the Mason City, Iowa UPI report of the plane crash on Feb 3, 1959. I don’t believe the writer had any idea how important this event was.

Our final show of 2024 last night at Deadwood Mountain Grand. “One Night in Memphis” featured tributes of Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Elvis. It’s a fun country/rockabilly show. I brought out some items we don’t use much - grand piano shell, upright bass and a 1965 Ludwig “Club Date” drum kit. I’m grateful for all the production people that helped me get through another year. Rob and Jo at DMM Systems, Jason and Eric at Powerhouse Audio, Scott Gooch at Perfect Wave Audio, Jory from Nightlife in ND, Nate over in WY. Also a huge and heartfelt thank you to all of the crews, stagehands, promoters that work hard, long days to keep everything working smoothly.
