Mental health matters, and Dr. Edmund Burke Haywood helped improve mental health treatment in North Carolina. Serving on the board of directors at Dorothea Dix Hospital for 25 years, Dr. Haywood helped establish two additional hospitals in the latter part of his life: Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro (the only mental hospital in the state to accept and treat Black patients until the 1960s) and Broughton Hospital in Morganton.

Starting this week, Haywood Hall is once again open for FREE guided history tours throughout the house and grounds! Tours are every Wednesday at 11am, 1pm, and 3pm, or by appointment at other dates and times. No reservations are required on Wednesdays - please come by and see us!
