People Behind The Magic:
Penny Howard began as a client with Step By Step. After receiving support and guidance, she decided to invest back into the mission - becoming the longest employed person and a foundational voice for Step By Step as its Bookkeeper. Penny was able to use her personal experience to feed into the ideas and project of creating Farm 12 Restaurant. Her story is one of our favorites.

“I didn’t come to Farm 12 as a visitor—I came as part of its beginning. As a former client serving on the advisory council, I had the privilege of speaking into the project long before the restaurant ever opened its doors. By then, I was already working with Step By Step, pouring my heart and time into an organization that had once walked alongside me through one of the hardest seasons of my life. When the vision for Farm 12 started becoming reality, it felt like watching hope take tangible form. I wasn’t just helping to open a restaurant—I was helping to create a space where former clients could build sustainable lives, regain independence, and step out from under the systems that often keeps people from making real, lasting progress. To be part of that transformation from the ground up was—and continues to be—deeply meaningful.

I've been around for over 18 years as an employee of the organization; second longest employed person behind our executive director/founder. I was once a client, then I volunteered for a while, but I was offered a position to assist Krista and it grew into so much more once my skills were known and recognized. What stands out most after 18 years is the overwhelming kindness that fills this place. I’ve watched Step By Step grow, watched Farm 12 and Fika both rise from plans on paper to a living, breathing hub of community—and the thread that runs through all of it is LOVE. Not the soft, easy kind, but the kind that shows up, believes, and invests even when life is messy. I’ve seen families walk into our program with heavy hearts and leave standing taller. I’ve seen staff lift each other up during difficult seasons.

The transformation—of people, of spaces, of lives—never ceases to amaze me. Before moving to Washington, I worked in the restaurant industry and the culture we embody at the farm is not the cultural norm experienced in the industry as a whole. I truly feel like we are shifting the mindset of the hospitality industry just by showing up and caring for our Farm 12 family like we do. Everybody Matters!

The mission resonates because it is, quite literally, part of my story. Step By Step met me in a vulnerable chapter of my life, not to rescue me but to walk beside me. That approach—empowerment with dignity, encouragement without judgment—is what makes this organization different. We don’t look at parents and see their circumstances; we see their potential. We hold hope for people until they can hold it for themselves. And I know firsthand how life-changing that kind of support can be, because it shaped who I became as a parent, a woman, and ultimately as a team member here.

You know, our program was once described as something that would 'never pencil'. If Krista had listened to that, none of this would exist today. Yet here we are—28 years later—surrounded by work that is not only sustainable, but deeply impactful.

Farm 12 Restaurant, Farm 12 Events, and Fika now provide meaningful jobs for community members and former clients. The Loveland Greenhouse has become the setting for one of our most beloved annual fundraisers with the hanging moss baskets. The Grove Farm School gives children a place to grow, explore, and ignite their imaginations while developing a lasting connection to nature. And soon, the Early Learning Center will open its doors to meet the growing needs of families in the Puyallup Valley - offering reliable childcare in a space designed to nurture development and support thriving families.

Sometimes I look back and can hardly believe the journey - starting as a young parent in need of support, then volunteering my time for Step By Step events, to joining the team, and eventually playing a role in opening Farm 12 and Fika… places that now stand as symbols of everything Step By Step believes in: redemption, possibility, and community. To see parents enter our program with the same fears I once carried, and to witness their confidence take root and bloom—there is nothing more meaningful. Being part of this mission is one of the greatest honors of my life, and I am endlessly grateful to have the opportunity to walk alongside the brave families who trust us with their stories.”

Penny Howard’s story is a powerful testament. Beginning as a client of Step By Step, Penny chose to invest back into the mission that once walked alongside her. Her experience, dedication, and unwavering belief in the mission have helped shape these spaces. Thank you, Penny, for your years of service, your leadership, and for reminding us that when we lead with love and believe in people, transformation is always possible.

People Behind The Magic:
Robbi Heath was able to witness firsthand the heart behind Farm 12, Step By Step, and Fika. As a volunteer, she not only served the mission, but was able to meet women who have walked through our Dreams Work program and seen their growth.

“I have been volunteering at Step By Step for about 12 years. Most of that time has been spent in the baby room getting the bags ready for the caseworkers to give to the new moms. When the greenhouse opened, I started volunteering there in the spring. One spring there was a new worker, she had been a past mom with Step By Step. I tried to engage her, but she was very focused on what she was doing and did very little chatting with anybody else.

The next spring she was back, but she was a completely different person, she had a big smile on her face and she was talking to people, I was absolutely floored at the difference in her. When I asked around, I found out that she had gone through the Dreams Work program. Step By Step has done an amazing job of preparing mom’s for childbirth and mothering and now they’ve added the training they need to get out into the work force.

The transformation in this woman was nothing short of a miracle. I am in absolute awe of how they come alongside these women and equip them to be successful in so many different areas. I am forever thankful that our area has Step by Step building up and caring for these moms, the ripple effect just goes on and on.”

We are so grateful for the time Robbi has spent to help change the lives of women and children through her stewardship. All of our volunteers help to make dreams possible. Whether big or small, each act of kindness does not go unnoticed. Thank you to Robbi and all of Step By Step’s volunteers for the impact you have made!

People Behind The Magic:
For Melissa Moore, Step By Step is a place she resonated with after struggling to get assistance for herself and her daughter. Choosing between childcare and a job is a choice so many women are forced to make. Having experienced that challenge herself, Melissa now gives back generously to Step By Step. Through her continued support, she helps ensure that other families receive the assistance and stability they need to move forward.

“I saw the video with Krista highlighting the Early Learning Center and I was so impressed on what was happening that I wanted to be a part. There was a point in the video that she mentioned the choice of paying for daycare over working. It hit home for me as when I was 17 I had my daughter Keionna and even though I was working, the state assistance for daycare helped me be able to work and put her in daycare. When I got a raise at work from 12.50 to 13.50 I was cut from the benefits. From there I was forced to choose to either keeping going or give in. I kept going.

It’s programs and resource’s like Step By Step that help fill in these gaps. Being a part of it and being able to help other young mothers who might be in the same or similar situation is honestly an honor for me.

The impact of the program and success of the process and programs has been the most impactful to me. Watching and hearing the stories of these parents touches me to my soul. It’s programs like this that help build foundations of success.

The power and people of the program is what stays with me. Not every case worker may hear it, but what they do on a regular basis impacts these mothers and fathers for the rest of our lives. I will always remember my case worker, Julie back in 1997-98. Even though it wasn’t Step By Step - it was a similar program out of Kent. Her gentle manor, consistency in reaching out, and words of encouragement is what kept me going and today I owe a lot to her never giving up on me. I know these case workers are more than what they give themselves credit for. They are like family, a sister, a friend and that is truly the only thing that some of us need.”

Melissa’s story is another example of opportunity, kindness, and determination. Being able to give back and contribute to a program that would have helped her as a young mother is a beautiful, full-circle moment - one we we’ve been blessed to see many mother’s do at Step By Step and Farm 12. We are so grateful for Melissa with Artco Sign Company and all of the incredible donors who have contributed so many funds to support our families.

People Behind The Magic:
Jessica Cordova received assistance from Step By Step after the birth of her fourth child. Struggling with severe separation anxiety, she feared she might never be able to enter the workforce or provide educational opportunities for her children. Step By Step, however, saw what Jessica could not yet see in herself - a capable, determined mother with the potential to build a brighter future for her family, given the support to take her next step forward

“I got a letter in the mail from the hospital right after my daughter was born and then somehow Dyan, a case manager, showed up at my door. I was later invited to be a part of the Dreams Work Program. I agreed to enroll in the program. Dyan and Elizabeth were by my side and helped me graduate from the Dreams Work Program. At the time, I never even knew Farm 12 existed, but during the program, I job trained at Farm 12 and after graduation, Farm 12 offered me a job in the restaurant as a busser.

Before Dreams Work, I hadn’t worked in about 12 years. I had severe separation anxiety, and I could not be away from them. I stayed home and even homeschooled them so we could be together all the time. I didn’t know what to do with myself without my kids. I didn’t trust anyone around them and I didn’t want to be by myself.

Step By Step helped me overcome being dependent and attached to my kids. They helped me feel comfortable working without worrying. With my youngest daughter at The Grove, this is the first time I’ve been able to be okay leaving her with people I trust and being able to work on site so I am close to her. I would have never probably let her go to school. The rest of my kids didn’t go to public school until recently.

That was a huge obstacle to overcome. I’ve started off with having my daughter doing half days at The Grove and I am considering full days so I can work more. It’s really huge for me to be considering that.

My daughter loves The Grove so it makes it easier for me to choose that for her. And it’s nice to have The Grove right here on site so I know she’s close by. That’s the best thing.

I appreciate how supportive Step By Step has been. Everyone at Step By Step and Farm 12 are so friendly and flexible. It’s helped me adjust a lot especially with my situation and my family. Since working here, I’ve become a lot more open. Before, I wouldn’t have even been able to have a conversation with you now. I have a hard time even doing things like this. I’ve always tried to avoid people and now, I am a lot more comfortable with people. It’s opened me up more to other people.

What’s stood out the most is that the women at Step By Step have felt like family. It’s also been about accountability for me. I have grown a lot at Farm 12 and I actually work with the events team now. I really enjoy working on the events side. I love decorating, it makes me happy. It has also been so cool to throw other mother’s baby showers and get to be involved with celebrations. It feels like I am giving back. I think knowing that my kids started school and they're thriving and they love it, that's nice, too. If they didn't like it, I probably would pull them out.

I don't think I would be working if it wasn't for Step By Step. They pushed me to step out more and gave me the support to be able to get back to work. And I like work mode. I like to stay busy and I like to work really hard so it's been awesome. It's a really great feeling to know that I am essentially giving back to what helped me in the very beginning.”

Jessica’s story is one of growth, resilience, and transformation. During her time at Farm 12, she has truly blossomed - sharing her bubbly personality and genuine warmth with everyone she encounters. Through the support and sense of safety found at Farm 12 and Step By Step, both Jessica and her daughter have been able to grow side by side, experiencing community, confidence, and connection together. Today, Jessica is thriving, while watching her daughter flourish in that same environment of care and belonging.

People Behind The Magic:
Christine McClendon is a case manager for Step By Step. She works first-hand with clients, through home and hospital visits, providing guidance, support and teaching classes about birthing and infant care.

“When I first heard about SBS, 11 years ago, I could have never imagined what the enterprise would become! I was brought on as a home visitor as they were needing an additional case manager. I naively took on the role, not knowing exactly how I would merge my skillset in a home visiting setting. My background is in nutrition, infant feeding, lactation and public health, and it quickly became a great fit to join this amazing team!

I really love the continuity of care between pregnancy, newborn care and infancy. I never would have imagined how much I would learn from my clients and coworkers. It has been an immensely rich experience to get to meet clients from various backgrounds, cultures and life experiences.

It has been such an honor to help families navigate this profoundly sacred time of their lives. I love that when we are committed to supporting families, there’s rarely a “no”. When I’ve needed to help meet an odd need for a family, we have often found a way to make it happen, either through donations, connections or just the generosity and time of our volunteers. I also absolutely love that there’s always been a larger vision for the wellbeing of our families. We’ve never “just” been a home visiting program because our director has been able to see the bigger picture of the systemic needs of our clients.

Shout out to the amazing support staff, volunteers and donors that make this work possible. It is humbling to be in the company of so many that collectively prioritize families and children in the community. We couldn’t do this without you!”

Christine has a deep passion for infant care. As a consultant, she has supported countless families by thoughtfully discovering what works best for both mothers and their babies with an open mind and compassionate approach. Christine often meets mothers in the hospital shortly after birth, helping them feel comfortable through her humor and positive attitude toward childbirth. She is a strong advocate for women in the early stages of pregnancy and motherhood, with the goal of providing equal opportunity and support for all women as they care for themselves and their newborns. We are incredibly grateful for Christine’s passion, dedication, and heart for teaching and serving. Thank you to Christine and all of our gracious case managers!
