Pueblo County Sheriff's Office Sheriff David J. Lucero, in consultation with area fire chiefs including Pueblo Fire Department Chief Barb Huber, is implementing Stage 2 fire restrictions effective immediately for Pueblo County due to the ongoing dry conditions and the extremely high fire danger that persists in the region.
Sheriff Lucero has been closely monitoring conditions and reviewing recent fire activity in the area, including the Aspen Acres fire currently burning in nearby Custer County, which led to the issuance of the restrictions.
“This is not a decision that I take lightly but is one that is done with consideration for safety and well-being of our citizens and First Responders, particularly now with the Aspen Acres fire in Custer County,” said Sheriff Lucero, who is the fire warden. “With the extremely dry conditions, lack of precipitation and the number of fires that have occurred in and around Pueblo County, this has become a real safety concern. Even though we may see some precipitation, it will not be enough right now to lessen the fire danger.”
Stage 2 Restrictions prohibit:
1. Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire. This includes charcoal grills and barbecues, coal and wood burning stoves and sheepherder's stoves and includes use in developed camping and picnic grounds.
EXCEPT: Devices using pressurized liquid or gas (stoves, grills or lanterns) that include shut-off valves are permitted when used in an area at least three feet or more from flammable material such as grasses or pine needles.
2. Smoking. EXCEPT: Within enclosed vehicle, trailer or building.
3. The sale or use of fireworks
4. Welding or operating acetylene or other torch with open flame.
5. Operating or using any internal combustion engine (e.g. chainsaw, generator, ATV) without a spark arresting device properly installed, maintained and in effective working order meeting either:
6. Operating a chainsaw without an approved spark arresting device as described in Prohibition #4, a chemical pressurized fire extinguisher (8 oz. capacity by weight or larger and kept with the operator) and a round point shovel with an overall length of at least 35 inches readily available for use.
7. Using an explosive. This includes but is not limited to fuses or blasting caps, fireworks, rockets, exploding targets, and tracers or incendiary.
8. Possessing or using a motor vehicle off established roads, motorized trails or established parking areas, except when parking in an area devoid or vegetation within 10 feet of the vehicle.
Violations of the fire restrictions can result in fines and mandatory court appearances.
“Stage 2 Fire Restrictions include the ban of fireworks, which means all fireworks stands within City limits are currently closed for public purchase,” said City of Pueblo Fire Department Chief Barb Huber. “With current dry weather, high temperatures predicted for the rest of the week and increased outdoor activity for Independence Day, we want to encourage the public to be safe and responsible. Thank you for your cooperation,” said Chief Huber.
“We ask that the public strictly adhere to these fire restrictions and to use their best judgement with regard to anything that might emit a spark,” said Sheriff Lucero. “Our resources right now are going to be dedicated to the Aspen Acres Fire as our priority is life and safety of our citizens.”
