Remembering Those Who Shaped Our Lives

Memorial Day is a time to remember those we have loved and lost — the people whose lives shaped our families, friendships, and communities in meaningful ways.

Today we reflect on the stories, traditions, and memories passed from one generation to the next, and on the lasting impact of those who came before us. Their lives continue to shape our families and communities through the memories, values, and love they shared.

We hold space for remembrance, gratitude, and hope. May this day reconnect us with the people and memories that continue to live on in our hearts.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” — Matthew 5:4

This Pentecost Sunday, Evan Rodgers shared a message titled “Rivers of Living Water,” centered on Acts 2:1–21 and John 7:37–39. Reflecting on Christ’s invitation to “come to the waters,” the sermon explored the Holy Spirit as living water — a sustaining and renewing presence that nourishes the soul and gives strength for daily life. Drawing connections to Psalm 42, Psalm 143, Isaiah 55, and John 4, the message reminded us that the spiritual well Christ offers never runs dry. Just as Jesus described himself as the Bread of Life, the Spirit becomes the energy and sustenance that helps us navigate life with hope, purpose, and faith.

The sermon encouraged the congregation to intentionally receive the miracles and beauty God is constantly offering in everyday life. Through prayer, meditation, mindfulness, Sabbath rest, worship, relationships, and time spent in nature, we open ourselves to the movement of the Spirit. Evan reflected on how easy it can be to focus on negativity, yet Pentecost calls us instead to recognize the goodness of God working all around us — often through simple and small moments of transformation.

Inspired by the hymn “God of Change and Glory,” the message also emphasized the importance of diversity, inclusion, and interfaith dialogue. God works through many people, experiences, and communities, and faith invites us not only to believe, but also to participate, belong, and share in devotion together. Pentecost serves as a reminder that the Spirit is poured out on everyone, calling all people toward compassion, understanding, renewal, and living water that continues to flow freely for all.

🐸🎉 Happy 71st Birthday, Kermit the Frog! 🎉🐸

Kermit has spent 71 years reminding us of the power of hope, kindness, and bringing people together—values we cherish deeply at Provo Community Congregational United Church of Christ.

Like Kermit, we believe in building bridges, celebrating our differences, and trusting that “someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection.” In a world that can sometimes feel divided, Kermit’s gentle spirit reminds us that love, laughter, and community can help us create something beautiful together.

Here’s to 71 years of songs, smiles, and timeless wisdom from one remarkable frog.

💚 Happy Birthday, Kermit!
May we all keep believing in the rainbow connection. 🌈✨

This past Sunday during worship service at Provo Community Congregational United Church of Christ, Adrienne Rossetti shared a meaningful sermon titled “Working in the Name,” based on Acts 1:6–14 and John 17:1–11. Drawing from Jesus’ final prayer for his disciples and the story of the apostles waiting together after the Ascension, Adrienne reflected on what it means to carry on Christ’s work in our own time. Jesus prayed that his followers would be united in love and protected as they continued his ministry in the world. In Acts, the disciples responded by gathering in prayer, trusting that God would guide them and empower them for the work ahead.

Adrienne reminded us that we are called to live and serve not for our own recognition, but in the name of Jesus—seeking to embody his compassion, humility, justice, and peace. Even when the future feels uncertain, we are invited to remain faithful, support one another, and trust that the Holy Spirit is still at work among us. As followers of Christ, we continue his mission by loving our neighbors, caring for those in need, and helping build God’s beloved community here and now.

We invite you to join us for worship next Sunday, May 24, at 11:00 a.m., when Evan Rodgers will share the sermon, “Rivers of Living Water,” based on the Gospel of John. We will also celebrate Pentecost Sunday that morning as we remember the gift of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church. All are welcome!

The Provo Community Congregational United Church of Christ is heartbroken by the recent shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego.

We hold the victims, their families, and the entire Muslim community in our prayers and in our hearts. We stand in loving solidarity with our Muslim neighbors and condemn all acts of hatred and violence.

Every house of worship should be a place of peace and safety. In this painful moment, we reaffirm our commitment to love our neighbors and to work for a world where all people are welcomed, respected, and protected.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” — Matthew 5:9
