Looking for advice from a retiring flower farmer? 😄🤗 I got you! I get asked a lot of questions from friends about what I've learned and advice I'd give, and while it's not always applicable to everyone, this message today felt like a good one to share! So here are a few key takeaways I've learned and flowers I'd recommend for those starting out! ...
1- And truly THE MOST IMPORTANT...
Don't be afraid to do what speaks to you most! You have a unique take on the world, on beauty, on scent, on design...
And... There is a market that will be drawn to what you do, whatever it is!
Easiest flowers to grow that I've experienced (annuals list).. (and if you don't know, annuals only growing one year and then die, but many reseed). These are all true annuals...
Zinnia, scabiosa, cosmos, bachelor buttons, orach, Amaranth, sunflower, ornamental grasses, snapdragons, companula, cress, calendula. Now, I wouldn't say those are all my favorites, but definitely easy.
Personal favs (annual + perennials)...
Snapdragons, zinnia, celosia, delphinium, peony, scabiosa (both annual and perennial varieties), lemon basil, foxglove, echinacea supreme cantelope, geum, iris, sweet peas, lisianthus, ranunculus, anemones and garden roses. Dahlias are pretty high, but they as well as ranuncs, anemones and lisianthus are much more work in my climate than these others. Unless you buy plugs of lisianthus, then they are very reasonable to grow.
As far as selling and business. Make yourself very VISIBLE!! Both your face and with regularity in posting on social media. Be in your posts. Do videos. Let people get to know you. But post LOTS of pretty things. It's great for people to see the actual work, but make sure your feed is PRETTY! As much as people love to see the behind the scenes, when they come to your page, if it's not esthetically pleasing, you won't get the followers you're looking for.
Work on your photography and have a look, a background, a color scheme if you can manage it, and a rotation of the type of content and info you're sharing. Also, try to determine a niche that will identify you and your brand. ❤️
Can't wait to see what you create!!
