Happy Saturday All!

We've been busy turning over the garden beds and harvesting lots of peppers and eggplant. So today (8/29) between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m., we'll have Hyacinth (the farmstand truck) out at the farm with purple and striped eggplant, sweet red bell peppers, pimento peppers (time to make cheese!!!), and maybe a few bunches of zinnia.

If you don't have a family recipe for pimento cheese, we're happy to share our favorite from Allrecipes - https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/189930/southern-pimento-cheese/

We still have spaces available in our Vine & Design workshop on September 12th 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Learn how to make a vase or centerpiece arrangement without green foam blocks. Then take it home. We'll also enjoy some snacks and mocktails from the garden as we design. Reserve your seat before August 31st. https://www.graystemfarm.com/calendar

We had a lovely time at the Farmstand Trail yesterday. It was really nice to meet so many new people from the County. A HUGE thank you for adding us to your day! A few of our visitors asked what they should do when they complete Bingo or the full card. If you didn't have a photo of your card taken at the last stand you visited, feel free to send a pic of your completed card with contact information on the bottom to our farm email and I will be happy to forward it to Brooks Bread Co. - or you could DM it directly.

Did you miss the Powhatan Farmers Market yesterday? Not to worry, tomorrow (Saturday, August 1st) is the second Powhatan Farmstand Trail and we're number 12 on Route 13 (Old Buckingham Road) 7 miles southwest of Route 60! For everyone new to our page, this is Hyacinth, our flower truck and she is our 13 West Flower Stand at Graystem Farm. Look for the blue umbrella and the BIG flower flag. Hyacinth will be full of beautiful summer blooms tomorrow, and veggies too! We'll have Italian and Japanese eggplants, cucumbers for pickling and slicing, and plenty of peppers! Sadly the pimentos won't be red for another week or two so if you love making pimento cheese, we'll have you covered then.

Way back in 1993, when we bought our first place in Powhatan, we only traveled along Route 522, Route 13 and Route 60. Everything we needed was found along these roadways – Texaco or Red Barn for gas, the IGA for groceries, Hertzlers for animal feed, the County Seat, Frisbys or the Trading Post for date nights out, the west-bound route to the in-laws or east-bound commutes into Richmond and familiar points in Chesterfield.

Before smart phones and vehicle navigation systems, with young children and an older car, I didn’t want to risk breaking down on any unfamiliar back roads so I never explored until the kids would visit school friends. Today, thirty-three years later, there are still roads in Powhatan I’ve never driven. There never seemed to be time or reason to explore, and that is sad. This autumn we plan to explore more of our home county.

If you’re in the same situation or new to the county, there is a fast and fun way to explore some of what Powhatan has to offer – the Powhatan Farm Stand Trail. On Saturday, August 1st from 9am-1pm, Graystem Farm is joining with twelve other producers for a leisurely summer Saturday built around community, back roads, and supporting small farm stands. And if this trail is as popular as the first one, there will be a third in October.

Why not make a day of it? Visit some or all, wander near or far. The map and bingo card list of producers is available on the Facebook Event page https://www.facebook.com/share/14rcwgJ3fg3/ I hope we see you then!

It's HYDRANGEA season! These beautiful blooms are getting ready for the Powhatan Farmstand Trail on August 1st. This particular hydrangea is called 'Limelight'. Its flowers turn from green to white, then ivory to pink tinged green again as they age. Very popular for weddings and perfect for drying too.
