Willow & Mabel Garden Co.

Willow & Mabel Garden Co. Willow & Mabel Garden Co I am an English transplant living outside of Seattle, USA. Well, it did not beat us. I am very nervous and very excited too.

For most of my life I have enjoyed growing vegetables and flowers but just as a hobby and a way to relax after a day at the office. A couple of years ago, my husband and I and our two teenage boys moved from our beautiful self-built house into a 100 year old dilapidated farm house on 5 acres of land. I think that everyone thought that we were crazy and had taken on a DIY project bigger than even m

y carpenter husband could tackle. My husband and two teenage boys, with help from lots of friends, transformed that dilapidated farm house into a wonderful, welcoming home that we are all so happy living in. Last year I was flicking though a magazine and came across an article about two women who gave up their office jobs and followed their dream of becoming farmer-florists. I read, and re read this article and thought how I would love to do that. The magazine article floated around my head for weeks thinking about it. I mentioned it to my husband, who never shy’s away from a challenge and he said “what are you waiting for? Do it!”

So here I am making my first tentative steps towards achieving my dream. The fear of failure keeps churning in my stomach, but as my husband says, “what is the worst that can happen? – We will have a lovely flower garden and green house.” I cannot afford to dive into this as a full time project but I am going to make baby steps towards that goal with the help and support of my family. So that is how Willow & Mabel Garden Co. started – which is lovingly named after our two Pygmy Goats! Now you can follow my muddy footsteps down this road & see what happens. As I was told recently – “Never die not knowing”.

Today’s faffing with flowers is a little bit later than normal due to a little visit with my son in NYC. Back to normal operations now and I took some time out to faff with some of the beautiful roses from gifted me. No matter how busy I am this is now a weekly thing. To play and photograph.

This week’s faffing with flowers welcomes in the most beautiful season of roses and peonies. Big flouncy blooms that like to steal the show.

To be honest some of the blooms were probably a little too blown out to use but on the other hand they were too beautiful not to use.

Flowers included this week are various peonies from & my farm, snowberry foliage, honeysuckle and David Austin roses - The Contented Gardener & a new favorite of mine Kew Gardens, Olaya & a couple of sweet pea stems my husband brought home from school - as well as teaching 4th grade maths he grows flowers outside of his classroom!

A little cutting back of pansies last night to encourage stem length growth. Of course I couldn’t just compost them so I found the perfect little milk jug to tuck them in.

Their sweet, heavenly smell and they will last for days.

If you are growing violas or pansies you should cut those first blooms off. The plant will then put its energy into the plant and grow bigger and stronger and ultimately give you longer stems rather than putting its energy into the flower.

I actually made this video for a friend but I thought maybe someone else might find it useful. ✨

Today’s faffing with flowers.

A couple of weeks ago someone stopped by to pick up flowers and they asked me how do the deer not eat my roses? I a little too smugly replied that the deer did not seem interested in them. I think those bloody deer were listening..because within two days they went to town on my roses. It broke my heart. They were generous enough to leave a couple of bushes untouched so I claimed this beautiful David Austin rose for myself before they come back for that.

Today from the garden I cut a couple of remaining roses - David Austin Kew & sadly I can’t remember the name of the beautiful pink rose. Honeysuckle, Argentine Forget me nots, bleeding heart, geum, columbine, Jack Frost, Iceland Poppy and violas of course.

Mechanics - large pin frog which is my preferred way of working.

Today’s faffing with flowers. Not all flower arrangements have to be a carefully curated design. Here we have an explosion of late spring flowers of orlaya and buttercups, a wildflower field in a vase.

The vase was given to me by my children for Mother’s Day this past weekend. They know me well. I love local, handmade ceramics. This beautiful vase was created by
