Willow & Mabel Garden Co.

Willow & Mabel Garden Co. Willow & Mabel Garden Co I am an English transplant living outside of Seattle, USA. Well, it did not beat us. I am very nervous and very excited too.

For most of my life I have enjoyed growing vegetables and flowers but just as a hobby and a way to relax after a day at the office. A couple of years ago, my husband and I and our two teenage boys moved from our beautiful self-built house into a 100 year old dilapidated farm house on 5 acres of land. I think that everyone thought that we were crazy and had taken on a DIY project bigger than even m

y carpenter husband could tackle. My husband and two teenage boys, with help from lots of friends, transformed that dilapidated farm house into a wonderful, welcoming home that we are all so happy living in. Last year I was flicking though a magazine and came across an article about two women who gave up their office jobs and followed their dream of becoming farmer-florists. I read, and re read this article and thought how I would love to do that. The magazine article floated around my head for weeks thinking about it. I mentioned it to my husband, who never shy’s away from a challenge and he said “what are you waiting for? Do it!”

So here I am making my first tentative steps towards achieving my dream. The fear of failure keeps churning in my stomach, but as my husband says, “what is the worst that can happen? – We will have a lovely flower garden and green house.” I cannot afford to dive into this as a full time project but I am going to make baby steps towards that goal with the help and support of my family. So that is how Willow & Mabel Garden Co. started – which is lovingly named after our two Pygmy Goats! Now you can follow my muddy footsteps down this road & see what happens. As I was told recently – “Never die not knowing”.

I know as each season ends another one begins but I truly don’t want sweet pea season to end..the temperature around here is rising next week and I know that the sweet peas won’t like that but I am not ready to say goodbye to them yet.

4th of July was spent flowering a beautiful wedding. In the evening I decided to faff with some of my favorite sweet peas…whilst listening to fireworks go off all around in the daylight, thankfully my dogs are not in the least bothered by fireworks ~ really who lets fireworks off in the daylight?- I don’t get it. Anyhow here are some of my favorite sweet peas from this year.

These happy little faces….my goal this year is to tuck some of these lovelies into all of my bridal bouquets. When a bride is about to walk down the aisle full of nerves and anticipation, hopefully when she sees this smiling face looking up at her it will allow her to breathe and know that everything is going to be just fine.

I am always poking around looking for good light for photography. The other night I was over in the barn taking some photos and looked over the horse stall to see this beautiful light pouring through. Of course it is filled with farm equipment, feral cats, brambles and swallows nests…but you know that won’t stop me chasing the perfect light.

Whenever I finish a wedding and have a few bits and pieces left over I always say to that I am going to create something with those…and invariably they go on the compost as life gets busy. Today I managed to squeeze in a little quite time and create and arrange with some odds and sods from the wedding and a few pieces from the farm.

However, now what do I do with this - a little big for the kitchen table…so it is now sitting loud and proud on the front porch. My neighbors probably think I am nuts - well honestly I think they already do…and I am fine with that. x
