Obsessed with my glass gem corn - I’ve been wanting to grow this one for years! Got the seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds a couple years ago and finally had a bed dedicated to them. Overall I’d say corn is fairly easy to grow if you can set irrigation to a timer and compost a few times throughout the season to give it a boost. I had a hard time figuring out when to harvest it - reading online about it I was told to wait til it’s fully dry on the stalk before pulling, whereas sweet corn you want ti harvest when the silks die off. I didn’t even get these to fully dry before the caterpillars started gnawing away at them, so I pulled them all yesterday and hoped for the best. Most of them weren’t fully pollinated, which doesn’t surprise me. The corn flowered 2 weeks before the silks appeared due to the extreme heat we were having here in Southern California. I suspected the pollen wouldn’t extend to all of the ears by the time silks grew in, but was curious.

I think next year I’m going to plant them a bit earlier (ie March or April) so I can hopefully harvest these earlier and beat the bugs to them! But overall I’m super proud of these, can’t wait to style them into an arrangement this week!
