Here’s what’s happening now at Portland Elks Lodge 188: our annual School Supply Drive supporting Lyseth School in Portland, James Russel School in Gray, and Amanda Rowe School in Portland. Wal-Mart, Target, Staples all,have great sales going on now for basic supplies - pens, pencils, erasers, scissors, tape, glue sticks, crayons, pencil boxes, etc - all things that young students in these elementary schools need. We’re collecting items up until September 4.

And it’s our annual Chicken Pot Pie fundraiser - delicious, buttery crust filled with chicken breast meat, potatoes, peas and carrots. Orders due by September 11, and pies ready for pick up September 25. Great for the freezer to have on a cool fall night.

Friday night DJ Stacey will be in the house with music and karaoke following the card games.

Our Annual School Supply Drive is underway and donations of supplies may be left in the Lodge Lounge. If you're not up for shopping, cash donations may be given to a member of the Activity Committee and they'll do the shopping.

The new State President Kip Clark and First Lady Donna Clark will be at Lodge 188 on Friday night, September 18, and the Plaid Dads band will play following the card games. Prizes for "best plaid" outfit!!

A Maine Country Cocktail Party is taking place on Saturday, September 19, in the Ballroom. Tickets are $25 and on sale at the Bar. The band Country Roads will have you on your feet all night!! A chance to meet State President Kip Clark throughout the evening.

It’s weeks like this when I have to take a step back and remind myself why I joined the Elks. And for me, it’s about the charity work our lodge does in our community. This week Willie Goodman, Cindy Dame and Joe Saindon delivered snacks to the Portland VA Center thanks to funds from the ENF Gratitude Grant. The Veterans Committee delivers snacks monthly so veterans visiting the center can enjoy a snack while there.

Today, Gary Rairdon, Laurie Rairdon, Jen Wagner and I served lunch at Deering Oaks using funds from the ENF Spotlight Grant. We made 90 sandwiches (egg, tuna, and ham salad), had fresh fruit, snacks, drinks, and Pamela Dill dropped off two homemade cakes for the folks at the Oaks. Jen actually brought her own table and bins of clothes all sorted by size. We all agreed after serving lunch that this is a very humbling experience, and how thankful we are for all that we have.

It’s because of our Lodge Activity and Veterans Committee members that Lodge 188 continues to do such good work for our community!
