What a rewarding day feeding the homeless in Deering Oaks park today. People were so polite and thankful for what we put out. Chicken salad, pasta salad, chips, soda and water, homemade cookies and brownies. So many thankful people. Our next day doing this will be July 18. Our lodge is doing this once a month through December. Let Kim Toppi know if you are interested in volunteering for one Saturday.

Thank you Margaret, Patty, Colleen, Barbara, Joan and Coco.

Portland Elks Lodge 188 presented checks Wednesday evening to three local non-profits as a result of the Basket Raffle Extravaganza held last month.

ER Joe Winschel, and members from the Activity Committee (Margaret Poulin, Patty Amico, Kim Toppi) presented checks to: Harrison Otterbein, President, St Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen ($1,000 and 40lbs of coffee for their coffee closet); Emily Loder, Youth Program Director at Intercultural Community Center and Nate Palmer Ameria Corp Volunteer ($1,900); and Alisa Gibson, Director Mission Advancement, Milestone Recovery ($1,900).

The Basket Raffle Extravaganza, put on by the Lodge's Activity Committee, is a success due to the overwhelming support of the Lodge's members who generously donate gift baskets, buy raffle tickets, and volunteer at the two-day event.

At the Portland Elks General Meeting on Monday, June 8, the Kathryn Paquette Scholarship was awarded to three recipients. In order to be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be full time students at an institution of higher learning the fall semester of 2026 and be a member (or close family relation to a member) in good standing of Elks Lodge # 188

Elizabeth Paquette Watts, granddaughter of Kathy, presented the awards for the Paquette Family, along with ER Joe Winschel.

Congratulations to this year's recipients: Samuel Binette, Isabella Smith, and Olivia Smith.

Sam is the grandson of member Martha Binette. He will attend UMF in the fall with a major in secondary education. Sam is a solid B student and active in school sports, especially golf. The Paquette family was impressed with Sam's volunteer work with elementary students, as well as helping senior neighbors with yard work. Sam's history teacher quoted, "Sam brings curiosity, humor, resilience and authencity into every space he enters."

Isabella and Olivia Smith, twins, are the granddaughters of member Pam Smith, and nieces of member Brenda Berry. Both girls graduated from high school at the age of 16 with GPA's over 3.75. The are both enrolled in Massachusetts colleges, Endicott and Merrimack. Their histories and recommendations were so similar the family couldn't choose one over the other, so split the award.

Congratulations to Sam, Isabella and Olivia!

Oh what a night! Northern Groove Band had Lodge 188 rocking all night long. Hats off to Kim M, Leeanne, Charleen and Andy for a great job in the kitchen. Susie and Deanna rocked it at the bar, and everyone who came out tonight to support Lodge 188, had a great time.
