Oh, hello! It’s been some time, so I thought I would re-introduce myself. 👋
My name is Julia and I am the founder of Silhouette. I started Silhouette back in 2012 when I was just 25. I had youth confidence. I would definitely cringe now at the sewing I was doing back then on my home Pfaff sewing machine. When you run a business you are forced to learn from all the good and bad that comes your way. And at each moment in time, I can say I was doing the absolute best I could at that time. My best has just improved with experience.
I started out designing clothes along with doing alterations and making custom clothing. I loved seeing the jackets I made in the wild around Portland, but hated hearing people wonder why my clothing was so expensive (even though I was only making $10/hr). Since I’m not naturally a salesperson, focusing on just alterations made the most sense.
Alterations are all about solving problems. A client has a garment they love but it doesn’t fit them right. We fix that! We make clothing better. We’re not adding to clothing waste; we’re helping people wear what they already have.
Now that I have two kids, I’m only at Silhouette doing fittings once a week. This gives me the flexibility I need. And I get to sew, answer emails, and manage my team of six the rest of the week. And that keeps me busy! I’m not on social media much because it’s too much of a time suck and it gives me anxiety. But I do like to share projects we’re working on and the gorgeous photos from our brides’ weddings from time to time.
I hope to see you around Silhouette or over email!
