Jessie McCall Photographer I grew up in the small Northern Californian historic mining town of Nevada City.

I developed a love for photography in high school when I took my first darkroom class and began using my fathers old Canon AE-1 to photograph my friends and surroundings. One of my biggest influences was working with Mary Ellen Mark as a mentor. She helped shape me into the photographer I have become today. I love to travel and have taken my camera all over the world to such places as Europe, Sout

h America, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand and road trips across our beautiful and diverse country. I am currently based out of Portland, OR but am forever willing to travel and visit new and familiar places. Please inquire for further details or questions, cheers!

So many besties popping out lil bbs. Quick lil off the cuff session with & in her last month of pregnancy. She welcomed sweet baby girl on Dec 30th and it’s absolute torture that they’re up in Portland and I haven’t had the chance to meet her yet. 🥰 love being invited to document my friends building their lives with their loves.

This year I’ve been shooting a lot - just not the usual content you’ve been used to seeing on this account. I’ve done a number of weddings, profiles for local businesses for (like this shoot here of Planet Refills), headshots, maternity.

Photography is a tool I’ve been perfecting for over 15 years. It’s a service I provide that can be utilized for many things. For a while there, I only wanted to be an Elemental Photographer, but with the economy being how it is, and living in a small town, I realized I needed to be less rigid on the parameters of work I was willing to take on because financial security has become of higher value to me.

Being a creative is an ever evolving journey of change and reconciliation. I grow with my art, I have realizations and I pivot constantly. It’s a winding road.

I wish I could be there but I’ll be in Vermont assuming auntie duties helping usher my chosen sister’s new bb into this world.

If you’re in the foothills, swing by and check out the amazing framing done by using wood harvested from Nevada City and milled on my dads lands. Seeing these photos on a little phone is cool but seeing them printed in 20x30 form is where it’s at!

Editing my butt off the next few days 🙃 I have no idea how some wedding photographers do 20+ weddings a year 🥵

I used to loathe editing but now I just relax into it. I start to go a bit nutty after hour 5/6 at the computer but I just remind myself it’s a blip in the map of the charmed life of a photographer.

A program I found a few years ago that changed the game for me with culling my images was Photo Mechanic. If you’re a photographer and you’re not yet using this, I highly suggest you get on top of it!

A very special addition jumped in the pool at the end of this maternity shoot. It’s not an easy task to capture a whole family underwater, mild chaos sometimes. But tender, sweet photos like this are definitely possible when we take the time to slow down and make it about play.

Everything underwater takes time and finesse. It’s all about figuring out where the subject is most comfortable and where they can push themselves.

As time goes on, I watch peoples abilities start to unfold. I watch them unwind and relax into the process. We find our rhythm together.

A couple months ago I invested in some new underwater education and flew down to Long Beach to take underwater workshop.

He set up lighting and brought in experienced underwater models and alakazam - I give you this image as a result.

It was super cool to gain extra understanding about working underwater and how to create certain looks. Also was so great to finally meet Brett in person and pick his brain.

Working with Leanne was nothing short of inspiring. Not only the photographing experience alone but the conversations we shared before and after the shoot showed me a woman who was ready to bravely branch outside of her comfort zone and launch into a new chapter of her growth.

The vulnerability that occurs during these shoots starts with the nudity but doesn’t end there.

It’s an incredible process to get in front of the camera and not know what you’re doing. To dare to feel silly or bad at something in front of a stranger. Then to lean into the trust that together we are going to create something beautiful, even when the process can feel ugly.

That’s the polarity of life though isn’t it?

To exist as a human on this planet is messy. This world is not polished and neither are our steps forward. However we are constantly bombarded with the idea of perfection. Perfect bodies, reactions, feelings, relationships.

With each step forward we learn a little bit more about ourselves and our existence and with that knowledge life does get a little bit easier and a lot more joyful.

Because perfection, the way we’ve been fed it by media - both mainstream and social - is unobtainable. It keeps us small, it keeps us feeling like we’re not enough this or too much that.

The best thing we can do for ourselves is start to realize a new idea of perfection. A perfection in self acceptance, whatever this looks like for you.

Perfection is the eradication of shame.

That’s a personal perfection I’m striving for.

13 days until & I hop in the van and begin our cruise north.

We have lots of gorgeous accommodations on the horizon. Underwater shoots! Hangs with friends we haven’t seen in a while. He and I have no idea what comes after summer. This is the first time in a very long time that I haven’t had a long term plan. It feels very foreign to me! And nerve racking - I find comfort in plans.

Boy has this relationship / this journey / this year / pandemic has challenged all my comfort zones. Ultimately I am grateful because there has been growth in that challenge. I have found myself somewhere I would’ve never imagined, living a story I could’ve never planned.

Yes to the moment! Yes to the next!
