"It is with great reverence that I write today about the passing of Sylvester Stewart, AKA Sly Stone. Some of my fondest memories are of me and my bass player Rocco Prestia climbing over the fence behind Frenchy's Nightclub in Hayward to watch Sly and the Family Stone play from 9pm to 6am every weekend when we were still teens. I believe his original band was one of the greatest bands EVER and Sly was the genius behind it all. We would buy his records as soon as they came out and then analyze his lyrics because they were always so clever. I believe Sly changed the way soul singers ever afterward would sing and we, all of us in music today, owe a great deal to his influence on our music. He greatly influenced the way I approach rhythm and also the way we in Tower of Power approach live performance. I pray that I will see him up there in heaven and I know that the band up there, with Otis and Jimi and all other greats, just got a whole lot better."
