Confucius said something along the lines of reflection being the noblest source of wisdom. It’s funny. This has been a theme in my life and in my conversations over this last week: taking time for reflection, creating space in our lives to allow for clarity and inspiration, listening to those tugs in our heart by quieting the chaos around us. It looks like my camera-eye is on this wavelength too. Here’s to slowing down, creating space for reflection & creativity, and the beauty in the upside down. 🙃 .

I woke up thinking about Kate and Drew and their boys and all of their fabulous family & friends this morning. Their wedding was almost three years ago. I never shared it with y’all because I’m the worst at that. If you know me, you know I am not - umm - succinct. How can I distill this magical day with beautiful people into 10 image slides???!!!??? I can’t. It leaves me feeling like I’m not actually showing you how beautiful this day was or these people are in any kind of meaningful way and I get stuck. Image A or image B. AorB AorB AorB?!! For three years. Here’s what I want you to know. When giving her speech at the fabulous party that followed the wedding day’s earlier moments that you see here, Kate’s mom said to Kate, “you have been THE love of my life”, and that resonated so powerfully into this daughter-mama’s heart that I think about that truth and that moment all of the time, even still. I feel it deeply too. Another thing I want you to know is that Kate and Drew are incredible people and I am so lucky that Kate and I still share texts from time to time. I take this wedding photography thing really personally and it’s important to me that my couples are MY PEOPLE. That we understand and care for each other, that it makes sense for me to be an up close presence in the emotional, intimate moments of their wedding days, that we still want to know each other years later. The last thing I want you to know is that while I absolutely love beautiful wedding details, gorgeous flowers and decor… it all pales in comparison to a celebration that is filled with people who love you and are full of joy and fun to celebrate with you. Kate & Drew’s day was the epitome of fun and joy and love. So, here’s a totally dissatisfying “part 1” to their day. Part 2, “The party” to follow….

A year ago, I had the absolute joy of photographing the wedding day of these two amazing souls at the Ladybird in Austin, TX. It was a magical day filled with heart & beauty & laughter & flowers & delicious cocktails. I’m ridiculous for not having shared every image from their day with you by now.

Sometimes it’s these super simple moments that fill my heart and take my breath. The texture of the waves, cooling feet as the sun rises over the water and kisses the faces of these beautiful souls. The sweetest baby taking in the ocean air & sun & sandy toes (& mouth!) for the first time. The beach is magic. Sunrise on the beach is extra, extra magic. ✨🌊☀️ .

Some days, we just need to flip our perspective on things to bring the joy.

This morning - husband out of town, soooo tired, spread sooo thin with home and businesses and momming, getting a toddler ready for school with everything going sideways - was one of those for me!

At the start of this portrait session, this beaming lil upside down man was having a tough day that even a lollipop could hardly fix (!). I love photographing kids because they are REAL! (The older I get, the less tolerant I am of inauthenticity.) I love that they reveal their true selves, true moods: silly, grumpy, wiggly, shy, and everything in between. I love telling the story of the real them in that, actual moment so much more than I love tricking them into momentary, plastic smiles. BUT, I also love the challenge of finding out what brings out their happy and their fun. Finding out what flips their perspectives. Sometimes, the answer is quite literally just that. 🙃

Simply seeing this pic was all the reminder I needed to smile and be grateful this morning, but a headstand/upside down flip is a good idea too. 💙
