The back story of Oklahoma

Long before Oklahoma was a state, before it was a territory, before European explorers put it on a map, the Wichita people were here. Their grass houses rose from the southern plains like the land itself had decided to take shape. 🌾

The Wichita and Affiliated Tribes are one of the original peoples of what is now Oklahoma. Who knew?

In 1903, the United States Supreme Court handed down one of the most consequential decisions in Native American history. Lone Wolf, a Kiowa chief, had taken the U.S. government to court after it allotted Kiowa-Comanche-Apache reservation lands in violation of the Medicine Lodge Treaty of 1867, which required tribal consent for any land changes. The Court ruled against him, asserting that Congress held absolute "plenary power" over Native lands and that treaties could be overridden at will.

The ruling opened the door to the mass allotment of tribal lands across Indian Territory that would precede Oklahoma statehood in 1907. Millions of acres passed out of Indigenous hands within a few years. Lone Wolf v. Hitchcock is still cited in federal Indian law today.
