As I am trying to think about how to recap Sarah and Alexisâ trip to state on Saturday I do so with very mixed emotions. There have been quite a few West Franklin musicians go to state over the last 8 years and all of them have worked extremely hard to get there. Armed with the well wishes and âgood lucksâ from their band and choir classmates they practiced countless hours, gave up evenings and Saturdays to practice and perform with all their hopes pinned on everything going right and the opinion of a judge who hears a hundred or more performances on that given day.
Even though Alexis is just a freshman, she handled the day like a pro. Her performance improved from Regionals and her word problems from the past completely vanished. Even though a girl right before sang one of her songs, she did not get rattled and even joked with the judge about it. She finished the day with an Excellent (II) rating and was 2 points shy of earning a one.
One of Sarahâs goals for this year was to score a I rating at state. She did not make it easy on herself choosing a solo that really pushed her with an accompaniment that made her job all the harder. She was confident and relaxed in the warmup room, as calm as I had ever seen her. Her run through went great and we headed to her performance room. The first 30 measures went smoothly, then the one thing all reed players dread, a squeak. She got flustered and did what almost everyone does, tensed up which caused another squeak. My heart dropped and Sarah walked out with grace and confidence but as soon as we got in the hall, her face told the whole story. She knew she had let the rating she had wanted so badly, slip through her fingers and she ended her HS career with an Excellent (II) rating, just not the rating she had worked so hard for.
Neither girl hung their head. They read through the comments from their respective judges and agreed with almost everything they said. I am so proud of both them, mostly for reasons that had nothing to do with the events of that day. I would be remiss if I did not thank our wonderful accompanist Matthew Meals. I am so glad he agreed to play for us this year. The girls took every opportunity to thank him and enjoyed getting work with such an outstanding musician and human being. I know most people donât understand the whole rating system we use in music, and this post would be a lot longer if I tried to explain it. These kids work every bit as hard to get to the state level as all the athletes do. Sadly though, the achievements of Scholarâs Bowl, Forensics, and Music often get overlooked. If you see these young ladies, please Congratulate them on their accomplishments. Let me be the first to wish our 7 Forensicators âGOOD LUCKâ at their State Meet. Go Falcons!!!!
