The name “Gwyn Careg” was given to the estate by Eleanor Clark Murray, a Boston heiress who developed the property in the 1920s. “Gwyn Careg” means “pure stone” in Welsh. Murray chose this name to reflect the estate’s character and her vision for its extensive gardens and stonework. The property became known for its beauty and was often referred to as the “inland Newport” of Connecticut.
