Pleasant Hill
The property, now known as Pleasant Hill, was originally part of a much larger estate called Green's Inheritance. In 1713, John Spalding purchased a 200-acre portion of Green's Inheritance. This land would become the foundation for the Pleasant Hill farm. The construction of the home occurred in at least three stages, demonstrating the gradual development of the property over time.
After acquiring the land, the Spalding family named the area "Pleasant Hill." They owned and operated the farm, making it their home for nearly two centuries. The Spalding family maintained Pleasant Hill until 1911, when the property was sold to John F. Sinclair. In 1919, Sinclair sold the property to Jeremiah Mudd. Over the years, the size of the original farm has changed, and its boundaries have been redefined.
One of its most famous occupants was Catherine Spaulding, born in 1793. After moving to Kentucky, she co-founded the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, an organization serving the sick, poor, and orphaned while promoting social justice in five countries.
Pleasant Hill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its most distinctive remaining feature is the Southern Maryland two-story porches, which originate from the mid-19th century.
