TL;DR - Cute owl alert at Camp. 🦉

Kim, our accounts manager, and I went owling after work last week. We could hear a great horned owl calling and tracked it to a tree on the hill between Fieldtown and the Dining Hall. After a bit, it flew towards Back Lads.

We started back towards the Greeting Shed, and as we passed Newbiggen, we heard the tremolo of an Eastern screech-owl. It's such a neat sound (sometimes called a bounce song) and differs from the "whinny" often associated with screech-owls.

We only heard it call once, so we continued on our way, and Kim got into her car and headed home. A minute later, she called, saying, "There's an owl in the road!" Sure enough, just before the entrance to Pinewoods, an Eastern screech-owl sat in the middle of Cornish Field Rd.

If you've heard any of the news lately from Plymouth (and in other communities in Massachusetts), there is a serious bird flu outbreak. This greatly impacts waterfowl - and birds of prey and mammals that feed on the sick and dead birds. There have also been many cases of secondary rodenticide poisoning, especially among owls. We were concerned as to why this little owl was just sitting there.

We watched it for a bit—it seemed alert, swiveling its head, blinking. I took a step towards it, and it flew to a tree a few feet away(yay!). It sat on the branch for a couple of minutes, and when we walked another couple of steps towards it, it flew off into the woods (double yay!).

So why was this owl just chilling in the road? Most likely, it had just enjoyed a tasty meal. If you're an owl, the edges along the paths, trails, and roads around Camp are a great spot to wait for dinner. 🌲
