Memorial Day was first recognized on May 30th, 1868 and originally known as ‘Decoration Day’. That date, at the end of May, was chosen for two reasons. One, spring flowers would be in bloom across the nation to adorn the graves of fallen soldiers. Two, the 30th wasn’t the anniversary of any specific Civil War battle, which they hoped would foster a sense of unity. Remembering and honoring those who died for this country, while heavy, is a beautiful thing. Maybe wearing that heaviness more often would do us all a bit of good.
