Lets talk dahlia storage!
Living here in Central Wisconsin it can be difficult to keep your tubers over winter if you don’t have a good storage space for them. Garages get too cold and basements tend to be too warm and this causes tubers to either rot or dry out. I’m blessed with a heated garage we keep between 40 and 45 all winter and it works fairly well for what I need, but here is the nitty-gritty of what helps with a successful over winter storage.
Dahlias storage tips:
-Temp between 40-50.
-Humidity about 85%, this isn’t something I personally monitor, I just hope the snow melting off our cars provides some moisture.
-I learned this year some growers in our region use a fridge or wine cooler. If I were to do this method, I would probably use the surran wrap storage to hold in moisture.
With all of that being said, the first year I grew dahlias, I was sick in the first trimester with our son and all I did was pull up the tubers, put them in a box, and put them in the garage. I still had some success having tubers over winter with that method, so try not to over think it!
