Thinking of getting chickens due to higher egg prices?
A few egg related facts to consider:
*If you buy baby chicks, they won't start laying eggs until they are 4-5 months old. In addition, there is a high probability that at least 30% of the baby "pullets" will grow up to be a rooster. If you live in an area which doesn't allow them, you will have a difficult time finding him a home due to the extensive animal welfare issue regarding unwanted and abandoned roosters across the US.
*As daylight decreases, hens will lay less eggs. When they molt, they won't lay any eggs. It has nothing to do with the feed.
*Hens have a high risk of developing reproductive issues due to excessive egg laying. Ovarian cancer is extremely common. Most of the reproductive issues require bringing your hen to see a veterinarian. Since not all vets see chickens, this may require driving a distance to get to them. You can find a vet using our website, PoultryDVM.com.
*There are many other considerations, including upfront and maintenance costs, predator protection, basic needs, time required to care for them, and other important factors to consider which we will cover in future posts.
