Tastykake really is a Philly original. It started back in 1914 when baker Philip Baur and salesman Herbert Morris teamed up to sell fresh little cakes that came individually wrapped, which was a pretty clever idea at the time. The name “Tastykake” reportedly came from Morris’s wife, and it didn’t take long for the brand to catch on. By the 1920s, they had moved into the big Hunting Park bakery that generations of Philadelphians came to recognize, complete with that huge Tastykake sign up top and trucks constantly coming and going. Krimpets, Kandy Kakes and all those other lunchbox staples were made there for decades. Tastykake eventually moved production to a newer bakery at the Navy Yard, but it never really stopped being a Philly company.
