Join us tomorrow at noon at the Monadnock Center, 19 Grove St., Peterborough!

Join us for a powerful public reading of Frederick Douglass’s historic speech, “What to the Slave Is Your Fourth of July?” — a timeless call to conscience that still echoes across generations.

Delivered in 1852, Douglass’s words cut through the patriotic pageantry of Independence Day to expose the painful contradictions between the promises of American freedom and the lived reality of enslaved Black people. With courage, clarity, and conviction, he challenged a nation to live up to its own ideals.

This event is more than a reading — it’s a moment of reflection, community, and action. As we gather to hear Douglass’s words aloud, we bear witness to the enduring struggle for justice and equality. We remember the past not to dwell in it, but to better understand our present and shape a more liberated future.

Come listen. Come reflect. Come speak the truth. All are welcome. Let’s learn and grow together.

All readings start at noon on Saturday, June 28th. Visit www. BlackHeritageTrailNH.org to find a reading near you!

First Place General membership, Houman A Place in the Shade. Our awards judge Jeanne Rosier Smith Pastel Studio had these comments: this piece is low lit with mostly green and white palette, despite these challenges, it achieves remarkable depth and realism, with incredibly sensitive color. The use of warm and cool greens, subtle edges, and the soft textured background leaf, make this quiet piece very powerful.

And the winner is—-Bloomstruck by Susanne Peterson Larkham. Judge of awards,Jeanne Rosier Smith Pastel Studio had this to say- With lighting and scale, this artist turned the tiny delicate blossoms of the hydrangea into a tour de force. Exceptional handling of the medium, exquisite color palette color palette and intimate perspective make this painting very compelling.
