Since Hurricane Ida struck in 2021, New Jersey has seen a troubling surge in flood-damaged vehicles entering the used car market, many of them without proper disclosure.

Hurricane Ida alone damaged up to 212,000 vehicles across the U.S., with a significant concentration in New Jersey, New York, and Louisiana.

By the end of 2023, New Jersey had an estimated 15,600 flood-damaged cars on the road—the highest per-capita rate in the Northeast at 1.69 cars per 1,000 residents.

The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General reported nearly 31,000 flood- and salvage-titled vehicles listed in its consumer protection database, many of which stem from storms like Ida and subsequent flooding events.

Flood-damaged cars often re-enter the market with “clean” titles due to title washing or repairs done by third parties who don’t report water damage.
