❤️ A Heartfelt Reminder About Tipping in the Dominican Republic
When we travel, it’s easy to forget how far a few dollars can go outside our own world. Back home, a $5 bill barely covers a coffee. A $20 disappears without us even noticing. But here in the Dominican Republic, those same amounts can make a real, immediate difference in someone’s life.
Most resort workers — the people who make your vacation feel effortless — earn the equivalent of $300–$400 a month. And that’s before you factor in long commutes, rising food prices, and the reality that many support extended families.
They show up every day with warmth, pride, and a smile.
They work 10–14 hour shifts.
They take care of the grounds, the rooms, the food, the pools, the gardens — everything you enjoy without even thinking about it.
And here’s the part most people don’t realize:
A $5 tip is not “small” here.
A $20 tip is not “extra.”
A $50 tip can change someone’s entire week.
It can mean groceries.
It can mean school supplies.
It can mean a bill paid.
It can mean breathing room.
And it’s not just bartenders who deserve it.
🌿 Groundskeepers who are out at sunrise.
🧹 Housekeepers who clean 15–25 rooms a day.
🍽 Buffet staff who keep everything running smoothly.
🛠 Maintenance workers who fix everything you never see break.
🚐 Drivers and porters who carry the weight — literally.
These are the people who make your vacation possible.
So if you’re able — even once during your stay — slip someone a little extra.
A $20. A $10. A $5.
Toss a big bill out if you feel called to.
Whatever feels right.
To us, it’s small.
To them, it’s meaningful.
And to the person receiving it, it’s a reminder that their hard work is seen.
Travel gives us a chance to enjoy life.
Tipping gives us a chance to impact life.
And that’s something worth doing!
