Our Chief Public Defender, Angela Brunicardi-Doss, recently attended the 2026 Partners for Justice Collaborative Defense Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, joining more than 220 public defense professionals from across the country.
The conference focused on issues public defenders are confronting today, including meaningful client feedback, the growing role of artificial intelligence, adolescent brain development in juvenile cases, and ways defender offices can better address the challenges clients face both inside and outside the courtroom.
Having Angela participate in conversations like these gives our office the opportunity to learn from public defenders across the country, consider new approaches, and bring those ideas home to West Virginia. That collaboration helps us continue growing as an office, expanding the way we think about what effective public defense can look like, and finding better ways to serve our clients.
Angela summed it up best:
“At the end of the day, all of this comes back to the same thing: improving the representation we provide to the person standing beside us because every case is ultimately about a person who is part of our community."
