A wedding that goes off without a hitch is a rarity. After months of meticulous planning for the “perfect “ day the unexpected can still happen. When our daughter married at our venue I felt the pressure of high expectations( mostly self imposed). After all we owned the venue. What would our guests expect? I felt like everything had to be perfect. So what went wrong?
1. None of the greenery was delivered. The flowers and greenery were to be delivered 2 days before the wedding. My team was there to unbox, get them in water, and prep them for making the centerpieces the next day. After opening the last box we realized that none of the greenery was there. We were missing 600 stems of eucalyptus and other greenery that were critical to recreating that Pinterest inspired arrangement. After multiple calls to the supplier we were told they would not arrive in time for the wedding.
2. The best man could not get here. Our best man was active duty US Marine Corp. Three days before the wedding he called and told us that he was called up for an emergency and would not be able to get leave. We had no best man!
3. The weather. After a week of beautiful weather-RAIN on wedding day! All of the outdoor decor and seating arrangements were covered in tarps and under a tent. The rain started just at picture time so those carefully selected outdoor backdrops had to move inside. And all women know what rain does to that hairdo that had been painstakingly crafted to be picture perfect.
I will admit these things resulted in moments of panic. How could this happen when we had so carefully planned everything? A new plan was made on the fly for the centerpiece which worked out better than the original idea. A friend of the groom stepped in to fill in the gap for the best man, and even though not all of the pictures were in the ideal location they still turned out great and captured those precious memories.
So for all you brides to be and mothers of the bride out there, things may not always go as planned. Take a deep breath. It will be OK. Make a new plan. Embrace the unexpected! It will likely make your day even more memorable and the imperfect wedding can still be the perfect one!
