Everybody reads Ephesians 5 at weddings. Husbands love your wives, wives submit. Almost nobody reads chapter 3.
I think that's backwards.
Chapter 5 is instructions. Chapter 3 is Paul on his knees asking God to supply what those instructions are going to require — and it comes first in the letter. That order is the whole point. He prays for power before he gives commands, because commands don't come with their own fuel.
And look at what he asks for. Not better circumstances. Not an easier spouse. That you'd be strengthened “in your inner being.”
Because that's what runs out first. Not money or time or even affection — what runs out is the capacity to keep being generous toward someone who's being difficult right now.
Marriages rarely fail from the outside in.

“Let love and faithfulness never leave you. Bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart.” — Proverbs 3:3

Couples ask me for this verse more than almost any other. Most of them couldn’t say why it feels like marriage. Here’s why.

Underneath it in the Hebrew are two words: chesed and emet.

Chesed isn’t the feeling. It’s loyal love — the kind that keeps showing up after the feeling has taken a week off. Emet is dependability. Being someone whose word holds when it costs something.

Now look at where Solomon says to put them. Around your neck, where everyone can see. And on your heart, where nobody can.

That’s the whole instruction. A marriage is a public promise and a private character at the same time, and it only holds when both are true.

Anybody can mean it on the beach with a hundred people watching. The real question the verse asks is who you’ll be on an ordinary Tuesday in year nine.

Bind it on. Write it down.

Michael and Monique — married this evening at Public Beach Access 98.

They came to the shore to make a covenant before Yahuah, in the presence of the people who love them, and they made it plainly and without reservation.

A marriage entered into this way is not held together by feelings. It is held together by a promise, and by the One the promise was made to.

Gracie and Trenden — Beach Access 22, Panama City Beach.

There is a particular kind of quiet that happens right before a couple says "I do" on the sand. The surf keeps going. The wind keeps going. And somehow, for about ninety seconds, everyone standing there is completely still.

That happened today.

It was an honor to stand with these two and their families, to pray over them, and to send them off as husband and wife. Congratulations, Gracie and Trenden. Your story is just getting started.
