Really liking honing in this grade, this is a couple things I changed with this post from previous ones:
• SLOG2 - I’m shooting on a A6400, which means its colors are 8-bit and not 10-bit so you don’t get the widest array of colors to be able to manipulate. I switched from SLOG3 which is better suited for 10-bit to SLOG2 which is better suited for 8-bit. SLOG2 isn’t as muted and pairs a lot better with 8-bit.
• 1/200 - normally I would shoot double my frame rate or 1/50 (or 1/48 if you’re really fancy) but I recently was told that pushing that shutter speed can make moments like this seem more…punchy? I’m not sure how to describe it but I truly love how it turned out, it’s not as cinematic/motion blur-y as 1/50 but when you have a high energy subject I strongly recommend pushing your shutter speed.
• 16:9 - I wanted to try a wide approach to video, I feel like, while we try and make vertical content for what fills the most space on your phone for reels, that a horizontal perspective really showcases more of a church and the culture, you can capture more people clapping or raising their hands or just a general response to what’s going on in the room. This reel really showcased, in my opinion, what can be missing from church reels sometimes.
Changing those things had me jump through some hoops, like running into the issue of having to push my ISO very high because of my shutter speed, like I’m talking 6400 with a f2.8 lens. But honestly I think with how well I’ve tuned the grade it’s hardly even noticeable, in fact I added a slight texture/grain to the video so it all turned out great.
Anywho, this is just behind the scenes of what goes on in my head when capturing and editing!
