Reminder: The Oxford Historical Society will hold its next gathering on Monday, February 10, 2020, from 7:00-8:00 at Old Church. This event is open to the public!
Our program will focus on the Yarbrough House, the residence at 107 W. Clark Street across from City Hall, which was purchased a couple of years ago by the city of Oxford. The Yarbroughs housed Emory students like many families of the 19th Century in Oxford when there were no dormitories on campus. Atticus Haygood lived with them as a student and eventually married their daughter, Molly. The city has had numerous discussions about potential use of the home, including engaging the Oxford Historical Society to curate displays of Oxford's history in it. At our meeting, we will bring the membership up to date on this project and talk together about what and how we might contribute.
Another part of the program will be sharing/showing a few special relics/treasures gathered from Oxford's past and plans to acquire more. We've found some really neat pieces!
I'm also pleased to announce that historian/musician and Oxford neighbor, Dr. David Leinweber, has graciously agreed to perform songs on piano and guitar at the beginning and end of our meeting/program. If you've never heard David perform before, his talent is more than reason enough to come to the program--phenomenal!
This gathering will also serve as our annual business meeting, at which we receive reports from our treasurer, from our facility coordinator, an update on ongoing projects, brainstorming of projects for 2020, upcoming programs, and voting on any issues by that require a vote.
Please bring membership dues with you on Feb. 10 or, if you are unable to attend, mail to P.O. Box 245, Oxford, GA 30054, OR send by PayPal to [email protected]. Dues are still just $10 for individuals $15 per family per year. If you're not currently a member, we welcome you, and please bring friends as well!
