Third Street, Ouray, between 5th & 6th avenues, in this 1893 Sanborn map. The Beaumont Hotel is shown at the corner of Third St. & 5th Ave.
It featured a barber shop with a 5th Ave. entrance and First National Bank, which opened in 1889, and faced Third St. The silver crisis in 1893 caused financial panic, and the bank closed its doors in July. The Rio Grande Southern railroad, with its president, Otto Mears in charge, was put in the hands of a receiver. Salaries at the City were reduced by 20%, and many city functions were discontinued, such as watering the streets, utilizing electric street lights, etc.
Other businesses on the block shown are a book store, druggist, two saloons, a shooting gallery and a fruit & confectionery store.
